iNANO and Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University part of new Nordic Consortium for CO2 conversion

Nine Universities from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland are participating in a new Nordic research hub that will focus on developing new materials and technologies for conversion of CO2. The hub has been granted 6,9 million EUR.

Nine participating Nordic universities, including Aarhus University, have recently been granted financial support (6,9 mill EUR) for the establishment of a new Nordic consortium for CO2 Conversion (NordCO2). This center will involve committed long-term collaborations between participating institutions in 5 Nordic countries including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, with the goal to jointly develop novel materials and technologies for conversion of CO2 to added value products, including pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and fuels. Through transdisciplinary cross-border collaborations, NordCO2 aims to strengthen respective research environments, improve student training, boost the likelihood of scientific breakthroughs, elevate international visibility, enhance competitiveness and increase acquisition of European funding.

“This is a huge boost for developing viable chemical methods in the Nordic countries for the introduction of an alternative carbon source to the chemical industry other than fossil fuels. The projects fit nicely with our overall goals in the Carbon Dioxide Activation Center (CADIAC), funded by the Danish National Research Center.” says Prof. Troels Skrydstrup, who along with Prof. Kim Daasbjerg are the main participating groups from Aarhus University.

Researchers at Aarhus University will be deeply involved in the research and training of PhD students, and will host a “Nordic CO2 day” with presentation of all CO2-related research from different fields in 2020. Furthermore, Aarhus University will be responsible for the Innovation section of the NordCO2 center, where a “Nordic Industry Panel” will be created and relevant Nordic industries are invited for exchange of knowledge and visions. This participation matches perfectly with the Open Science initiatives currently taking place at Aarhus University.

Facts:

Participating institutions are Aarhus University (AU), The Arctic University of Norway (UiT, project leader), the University of Oslo, the University of Bergen, Uppsala University, Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Stockholm University, University of Iceland and Helsinki University.
